Cannot Install ChemBioDraw 14.0 (Mac) – Solution Posted on September 5, 2014 September 5, 2014 by Niels Sievertsen In the field of synthetic chemistry, there is nobody who doesn’t use ChemDraw or ChemBioDraw for preparing their chemical structures.
In the field of synthetic chemistry, there is nobody who doesn’t use ChemDraw or ChemBioDraw for preparing their chemical structures. It may be for the sake of simply preparing a calculated 1H NMR or 13C NMR spectrum or converting chemical structures to names and vice versa. Obviously, when writing a thesis or paper, you don’t want ti go wrong and have the general layout for your chemical structures match the international standards. As part of our D-CHAB department here at ETH Zurich and the Laboratory for Organic Chemistry, we have access to the most recent versions of useful software for our work. This includes ChemBioDraw and especially ChemBioDraw 14.0, for that matter.
However, when I wanted to install the update, I was unable to do so. Even though I acquired the serial number and registration code from Perkin Elmer, I ran into a specific problem that occurred after entering these credentials. As a result, right after hitting enter and specifying the default folder location, the application just closed. Upon reopening, I had to reenter the credentials just to find out, that the problem persisted. However, I found the solution for this validation problem (See below)!
First of all, let me tell you that I am running Mac OS X 10.9.4 at the time of this report. Further, I tried to install Perkin Elmer’s ChemBioDraw 14.0. I am not sure if all related software acts the same upon installation.
1) I still had ChemBioDraw 12 on my system. So the first thing you wanna do is delete that one by dragging it into the trash bin and emptying it. ChemBioDraw doesn’t coexist with other copies of the software on the same user account. Therefore, the old one must go. (Sorry, buddy).
2) In your next step, go to the Finder and then in the top menu bar, do the following: Click on Go > Go to Folder… . Then, enter “Users/Shared/Library” without the quotation marks and hit enter. This will take you to the shared folder of all users on this computer. When entering the credentials (registration code and serial), ChemBioDraw 14.0 needs to find a folder in “Users/Shared/Library” called “Preferences”. So if you do not have this folder there, just go ahead and create it.
3) As soon as this is done (folder has been made and old ChemBioDraw is deleted), you can go ahead and set up ChemBioDraw 14.0. Notice, that after entering serial number and registration code, it will directly open the software for you and you can start to work. At the same time, Perkin Elmer’s ChemBioDraw will have put a certain file into the folder “Preferences” which we have just made. This new file “com.cambridgesoft.plist” contains information such as your default file path you specified, your registration and serial numbers, your user name, organisation, expiration date (interesting…), and more.
Extra Tip: On the first startup of the software, your Mac will usually tell you that it won’t open the application, because it is from an “unknown developer”. In order to still open it, just right-click on the application and choose “Open” from the context menu. Afterwards, your Mac will trust this application.
Let me know if this solution to this ChemBioDraw 14.0 installation problem worked for you, as well!
