Windows 8 and 10
If you are using Windows 8 or 10, you do not need to obtain fonts or keyboard drivers for Ukrainian. Microsoft includes Ukrainian support in the system software.

  1. Go to “Control Panel”.
  2. Double-click on “Clock, Language and Region”.
  3. Under “Language”, choose “Add a Language”.
  4. Click on “Add a Language”, right above “English”. A list of languages will appear.
  5. Scroll down until you find “українська” (near the bottom) and click on it.
  6. The Ukrainian keyboard is now added to your computer – a language bar will appear in the far right end of your task bar (at the bottom of your screen), which will indicate “ENG” (for English) as your language.
  7. Click on “ENG”, which will bring up the option of switching to Ukrainian.
  8. Click on “Ukrainian”, and you will now have non-phonetic Ukrainian on your computer.

For older versions of Windows:
On your computer, go to “Start”, then “Control Panel”, and then “Regional and Language Options”. This will bring up a three-tabbed folder. Click on the “Advanced” tab. There will be a header “Languages for non-unicode programs”; under that is a drop-down box with language options. Select Ukrainian. (It’s near the bottom of the list.) Then click “Apply”. Do not click “Okay”.

Go to the second tab under “Regional and Language Options”, which is “Languages”. Under “Installed services” click on “ADD”. This will bring up a drop-down menu that offers options to add languages. Add Ukrainian to this list. Under “Preferences” just below that, click “LANGUAGE BAR”. Show the language bar on the desktop. Now click “APPLY” for everything and “OK” to close the windows that you have opened in reverse order. You will now have non-phonetic Ukrainian on your computer.

  1. Download the .zip file here Ukrainian Keyboard – Phonetic.
  2. After extracting the file, copy them to the following directory: Macintosh HD -> Library -> Keyboard Layouts (you may have to enter your password when prompted).
  3. Open System Preferences and click on Keyboard.
  4. Click on the Input Sources tab and click on the + button at the bottom left of the panel.
  5. In the left hand column under Others, Ukrainian-Phonetic will appear. Select it and click Add
  6. Click on the Shortcuts tab.
  7. Select Input Sources on the left hand side.
  8. Make sure both boxes are checked and then create a shortcut by click in the space on the right.
  9. ⌘ + and ⌘ + ] were used for simplicity, but feel free to create any shortcut you like.
  10. Using the keyboard shortcut you have just created, you will now be able to switch between keyboards with ease.
