You can get the program in any of several different ways. The software is written in Java, but we now native build it for Windows 7+ and Mac OSX 10.7+.

An .exe setup file for Windows that DOES NOT REQUIRE JAVA. Download this, unzip it and click to run it. We’re still testing this, so please send feedback to support at inkwellideas dot com. Powered By Excelsior JET.
A zipped .app file/folder for Mac OSX that also DOES NOT REQUIRE JAVA. In order to use it you do need to temporarily change your security settings to install/open unsigned apps, then reset the security setting.
A .jar file that you simply double-click to run. It will prompt you to ask for an amount of memory to use. You will need java installed first to run it.
A simple .jar file for expert users. You’ll want to start it with the command line “java -jar -Xmx2000M hexographer.jar” (You can replace the 2000M with higher amounts of memory.)

I develop it primarily on a Mac. So it does generally work on Macs. The best way to confirm it works for you is to try the “free version” on the website. When searching for Hexographer do not include words such as serial, number, key, license, code, torrent, etc. Excluding words such as these will result in much more accurate results. Recheck your spelling for Hexographer just in case, you might also want to try searching without the version number.

Not seeing how this is an alternative - doesn't seem to have any editing options which is what makes Hexographer rather nice. 1 point 3 years ago.

I thought you may find my hex map software 'Hexographer' as a great free tool to make hex maps for prototype games. It was originally created to make hex maps in the style of some RPG maps of the late 80s/early 90s. However, I quickly added graphics for star maps and I've recently added icons for modern settings. The modern icons include an infantry soldier, a tank, a plane, etc., so you could create a map and include markers for an Axis and Allies type game. I've also very recently added some icons for a filled in forest, badlands, mountains, and wheat fields. These could be used for Settlers of Catan derivatives. (Icons for forest, mountains badlands existed previously, but weren't in a style that would be good for a board game.)

As I said, it is free but there is also fairly cheap 'pro' version. Both are the same software, but the pro version can be run offline (the free version is Java and starts in a web page) and the pro version has a few extra features such as the ability to replace icons or add new terrain types.

I genuinely want the software to help you, so if the free version does everything you need, please take advantage of it.
